The Pattern I Use Daily | CFM 2025 Jun 30-Jul 6 | D&C 71-75 | Primarily Scripture with Cindy Young
Hi, I'm Cindy Young, and this week I'll show you how using the study tips from past episodes can help you to find patterns in the scriptures. Together we will look at D&C 71:5-6 and find a promise, a list, and action words, and then we will ponder them until we understand the pattern the Lord is teaching us to follow. But we're not done yet! Then we ponder the promised blessing and how the Lord doesn't just want to bless us - he wants to bless us abundantly!
And if you've found this helpful, then please Subscribe, Follow, Like, Share, and leave a review. =o)
Don't forget the parable of the snowball: listening to someone else talk about the gospel is like having snowballs thrown at you. Reading the scriptures is like making your own snowball. Taking the time to search, ponder, and pray about what you've read is like rolling the snowball around and around so that it grows and grows. So don't just listen to me - please go read for yourself so your knowledge and testimony can grow and grow!!

Scripture Study
Hello, hello, and welcome back to another episode of Primarily Scripture. I am your host, Cindy Young. Thank you for being here with me this week. This is a Come Follow Me podcast. That means we study along with Come Follow Me. But even more than just looking at the Doctrine and Covenants lessons, we use this as an opportunity to learn how to study the scriptures even more effectively. I'm so excited to show you the study tip that I have for you this week. First of all, go to my website, primarily scripture.com, and download the free worksheet so you can follow along easier. Now you don't have to- you can also open up your scriptures. Turn with me to Doctrine and Covenants, section 71 verses five and six. Now, in other episodes and on other worksheets, we have talked about other study tips that we're going to kind of use together in conjunction with today's tip. In the past, do you remember that we have looked for promises? And do you also remember that we have looked for lists? Well, today we've got those together, and we're adding to it, looking for patterns. Now verses five and six, in section 71 says this: "Now behold, this is wisdom; whoso readeth, let him understand and receive also; For unto him that receiveth it shall be given more abundantly, even power." Now there's a promise in there. Did you catch it? It's right there at the end of verse six: "it shall be given more abundantly, even power." And that's kind of hard to understand because it's not super clear. So you'll receive power, but there are other things that you'll be given more of as well. And it's not super clear what those more things are. Another tip that we have used before: look for action words. So let's go back- we've got three action words right there in verse five. Let's find them. Readeth, understand, and receive. So we've got a promise, a list of action words, but sometimes it's more than just a to-do list, sometimes it is a pattern. As it says on my worksheet, a pattern is something that can be done over and over again and you'll get similar results. Not always exactly the same, but similar. And one way that the Lord gives us these patterns is by telling us things we can do to receive certain blessings. And isn't that what verses five and six look like? There's a list of things to do. And a blessing you'll get because of it. Sometimes it's just a list of things to do, and other times it's a specific order of things to do. Do you think the order of these action words matters when you are looking to receive that blessing? Let's look closer at what these three things are that we should do. First we read, and specifically read the words of God, right? Okay. So after you read the words, then the next step is to understand them. Do you think it matters what order we put those in? Of course it does! You can't understand something you haven't read yet. Okay, now let's look at the third one. After that we need to receive it. What does that mean? If you're reading something, what does it mean to receive it? You already read it, so isn't that receiving the words? You know what the words say? Well, it's even more than that. There's a spiritual kind of receiving that we can do, and we talked about this a little bit in one of the past episodes. Do you remember that I told you about my friend who had read the Book of Mormon but didn't gain a testimony of it? She did not receive it into her heart. So when you read the words- in Doctrine and Covenants, in the Book of Mormon, in conference talks- are you receiving them into your heart? And does it matter what order you do that? Can you receive the teachings into your heart if you don't understand them first? It is so important that we put this in order. We read, and try to understand and then what we do understand, we work to receive it- actively receive it into your own heart! Now, I especially love this pattern because this is the pattern that I used in order to build my worksheets. In the left hand column I have verses for you to read. And then in the middle column, I have it written out easier for you to understand. And after you understand it, then we can go into the final column on the right hand side, and we can search, ponder, and pray and try to do a little bit more so that we're receiving it into our hearts. Do you see how this pattern is exactly what you need to be doing for your scripture study? This is one of my favorite patterns ever in the scriptures! So now let's talk about that promised blessing. What are we promised?
Let's read verse six again:"unto him that receiveth," if you have done these things, "it shall be given more abundantly." What is it? Well, what were we reading? If we're reading the word of God, then you'll receive the word of God more abundantly. Abundant means in large quantities, more than enough. So if you're gonna be given more of the word of the Lord in abundance, there will be plenty there for you. When you just read your scriptures- you open it, you read it, you close it and put it away- it might not stay with you for the rest of the day. But if you study the scriptures and you follow this pattern- read, understand, receive it- then you can carry it with you throughout the whole day and all day long you'll be feeling the spirit and the spirit can speak to you and help you remember what you have learned. As long as you keep at it and keep trying, then you'll feel the spirit more and more, and your testimony will grow and grow and it will be given to you so abundantly! It's happened for me and I know it will happen for you, but I can't explain exactly how it'll happen for you because it's a little bit different for everybody. That's why I told you that a pattern is something that can be done over and over with similar results. Not exactly the same, but similar results. You can have similar results if you put in the work. And besides having that abundance of the spirit with you, you'll be given power. What kind of power do you think the Lord would give you when you follow this pattern? Now, I could tell you my ideas on that, but I want you to really think about it. And I would love it if you would go find a study buddy and show them this pattern that we found in the scriptures together. You could even go mark it in your scriptures. This would be a great pattern to teach to your family at family home evening or to your class because it's something that can help everybody. And then when you teach it, you can discuss with your friends and family what kind of power you think the Lord will give you. Again, it might be different for you than it is for me. There are lots of different ways that the Lord can bless you and he wants to bless you abundantly. I promise you that is true! Thank you so much for studying with me today. I love the other study activities on this worksheet, so don't miss those. There's some amazing things to study this week. I love to study the scriptures, and I know that when you follow this pattern, the Lord will bless you with an abundance of the spirit. I'm Cindy Young. Go study your scriptures! See you next week.
