Don't forget the parable of the snowball: listening to someone else talk about the gospel is like having snowballs thrown at you. Reading the scriptures is like making your own snowball. Taking the time to search, ponder, and pray about what you've read is like rolling the snowball around and around so that it grows and grows. So don't just listen to me - please go read for yourself so your knowledge and testimony can grow and grow!!

Felicity:

Hi, friends, welcome back to Primarily Scripture. I'm Felicity and I'm filling in for Sister Young for medical conditions. and this week we have Emily. Hi Emily!

Emily:

Hi!

Felicity:

This week we will be studying Alma chapter 43 through 52. So what would you like to look at today?

Emily:

Uh, let's look at chapter 46.

Felicity:

Okay,

Emily:

Let's start with the blue box. What did they do?

Felicity:

Okay, will you read that for us?

Emily:

It says, Find the things that Moroni and the people did. How can you be like Moroni? How can you be like the people who followed him? And I think it says to, like, write something about verse 12, verse 13, verse 19, verse 20, and verse 21.

Felicity:

Okay, so maybe we can go through the verses and then write what we found. Um, let's start with verse 12.

Emily:

"And it came to pass that he rent his coat; and he took a piece thereof and wrote upon it- In memory of our God, our religion, and our freedom, and our peace, our wives, and our children- and he fastened it upon the end of a pole."

Felicity:

Okay, so what did he do in that verse? What did Moroni do?

Emily:

He's like, remembering how they got their freedom and making a flag to represent that.

Felicity:

Okay, so there's this dude, Amalickiah, and he wants to change the government basically. And he wants to become king and take away everybody's rights. So, what Moroni is doing is saying people don't, um, don't elect him as king. Remember the rights Heavenly Father gave to you. And he's basically reminding them of what God has done for them. So what would you like to write in that first line?

Emily:

Um, so let's write reminding of freedom or something like that.

Felicity:

Reminding people of freedom?

Emily:

Yeah.

Felicity:

Perfect.

Emily:

Mm-hmm.

Felicity:

Okay.. The next section is verse 13."And he fastened on his head-plate, and his breast-plate, and his shields, and girded on his armor about his loins; and he took the pole, which had on the end thereof his rent coat, (and he called it the title of liberty) and he bowed himself to the earth, and he prayed mightily unto his God for the blessings of liberty to rest upon his brethren..." What do you think we should write? What did Moroni do in verse 13?

Emily:

Um, so in verse 12 he first reminded the people of their freedom, but in this verse he's now praying that that'll actually happen and that they'll actually feel reminded so maybe we can write like praying for help

Felicity:

praying to God for help?

Emily:

Yeah.

Felicity:

Would you like to read verse 19?

Emily:

"And when Moroni had said these words, he went forth among the people, waving the rent part of his garment in the air, that all might see the writing which he had written upon the rent part, and crying with a loud voice, saying," should I read verse 20, too?.

Felicity:

Um, sure, go ahead.

Emily:

"Behold, whosoever will maintain this title upon the land, let them come forth in the strength of the Lord and enter into a covenant that they will maintain their rights and their religion, that the Lord may bless them."

Felicity:

So Moroni said a prayer and now he's going to the people to remind them. Um, so what do you want to write on this line, verse 19.

Emily:

So he's going out and doing something about what he's prayed for and like he's taking action for having an action towards his prayer. So we can write like he's going and doing something.

Felicity:

That's a great thought.

Emily:

I'm gonna write go and do.

Felicity:

So in verse 20, um, he's inviting the people to make a covenant with God and I think that's great that he is inviting the people to become closer to God. And they have that choice. Okay, now let's see how the people responded to, um, being invited to make a covenant.

Emily:

Sounds good.

Felicity:

"And it came to pass that when Moroni had proclaimed these words, behold, the people came running together with their armor girded about their loins, rending their garments in token, or as a covenant, that they would not forsake the Lord their God;" I think this verse is my favorite so far. They're showing God that they don't want to leave him. They want to stay close to him. They want to...

Emily:

They're being committed.

Felicity:

Yeah, they're committed. I really like that. Do you want to mark that verse?

Emily:

Yeah.

Felicity:

Which color are you using?

Emily:

I'm using blue.

Felicity:

Which part of that verse are you marking?

Emily:

I'm gonna mark that they would not forsake the Lord their God.

Felicity:

Perfect. So what were the people going toward. In verse 21.

Emily:

Um, they were kind of going towards, um, Heavenly Father and showing more commitment towards him.

Felicity:

I love that. I love the phrase that they came running. Like, when do you ever run towards something? Like, do you run to get your chores done? Or do you run to go do the dishes? I know I would never do that. I don't like doing dishes, but they were excited to learn about God. They were excited to learn a new commandment, so I really like that they came running.

Emily:

I love that.

Felicity:

How does this apply to you, Emily?

Emily:

Maybe I can be more eager to learn something new about the gospel every day.

Felicity:

Love that. I love the covenants that I've made with God and I will always run for a chance to make another covenant with God because I know the blessings are wonderful. beyond the greatness that I can imagine. Well, Emily, this was so much fun. Thank you for joining me.

Emily:

Mm-hmm

Felicity:
